COMING TOGETHER FOR A CAUSE
Calendar Girls' uplifting storyline about sisterhood...
Members of the Knapley branch of the Women’s Institute in rural Yorkshire are a mixed bunch, from feisty florist Chris and her calm best mate Annie, who’s often persuaded to throw caution to the wind by pal’s mischievousness – to joker in the pack Cora, full-of-beans teacher Jessie, and downtrodden, Ruth. And then there’s glamorous, rebellious Celia and bossy, pompous WI chair Marie.
Their story really begins when Annie’s beloved, fun-loving husband John is diagnosed with leukaemia. Helping him on his cancer treatment journey, she spends hours in the relatives’ room of the Skipton General Hospital, on one of the most uncomfortable, tired old sofas you could find.
When John sadly passes away and with Annie deep in grief, Chris is inspired to raise cash to replace the shabby piece. Her idea? To produce an artistic nude charity calendar, and at the same time shake off the dusty, staid jam and Jerusalem image of the WI. But can she persuade their fellow Knapley WI members to shed their inhibitions as well as their clothes to pose naked for the calendar while engaged in traditional WI activities, such as baking and knitting? Her proposal is initially met with great scepticism.
Enlisting one of the hospital workers, an amateur photographer named Lawrence, to help them with the calendar, none of them expect the emotional and personal ramifications of their decision, but gradually the making of the fabulous and funny calendar brings each woman
into flower.
The true story of the Calendar Girls launched a global phenomenon, a million copycat calendars, a record-breaking 2003 movie starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, a stage play and musical written by Tim
Firth and Gary Barlow, which coined the term ‘craughing’ – crying and laughing at the same time.
With unforgettable songs, every performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity –
and also proves that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.
