RUDDIGORE
Celebrating 70 glorious years of shows Friday 28 June 2024 When Richard and Margery Graves started Mill Hill Amateur Operatic Society back in 1954, did they imagine the group would still be going strong 70 years later? Rebranded Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company in 2013, we have moved to more modern shows, but we will never forget our operatic roots and in a one-off to mark our platinum anniversary, we're staging Gilbert & Sullivan's superlative satire Ruddigore. SYNOPSIS (thanks to Opera North) Sir Despard Murgatroyd has inherited a centuries-old witch’s curse forcing him to commit a crime a day or die in agony. So it’s a huge relief when Robin Oakapple is revealed as his long-lost elder brother and the true inheritor of the curse. Robin’s romance with the faultlessly correct Rose Maybud looks doomed, but his troubles really start when his feeble crimes drag his exasperated ancestors back from the dead to haunt him… A reluctant villain, a modest maiden, amiable ghosts and scary professional bridesmaids – Gilbert & Sullivan make merry with Victorian melodrama in this hilariously inventive confection.
